Genealogy is about pinpointing our ancestor’s lines of decent, their place and time. Family History is about telling those ancestor’s stories, and our own. While I realize many family members do not share my passion for Genealogy, I know you do have a passion for Family History. I hear it in your voice when you tell me our stories.
We deserve to understand our ancestor’s struggles, contributions and place in this country’s history. They were there, and part of it all: War, westward expansion, the depression, to name a few. We should know. But we also have some good, old-fashioned murder mysteries and Indian stories in our family.
Curious about a family legend? Want to share a particularly fond memory? Have I got my ‘facts’ wrong? I’d love for you to let me know.
One of the stories I’d love to resolve is William Allen Chisholm’s civil war service. Family legend say’s he went AWOL. His Confederate Service records do have him Absent on the rolls for July and August 1863. Vicksburg fell 4 July 1863. There is evidence his company was at Vicksburg but that doesn’t confirm he was. But, if he ‘bugged out’ at the fall of Vicksburg, then he was smarter than most and saved himself much suffering.
I would love to get more information on the Orlando Flowers-Norman Frisby murder. The person responsible for this incident seems to depend on which side of the family you’re talking to. But, if the story is true that Orlando ran off to the Union to escape punishment, there are records that might be found.
Do we have any provable connection to any Indian tribes?
dad or Aunt Gloria may have some information and I know Dola did some research. There are some stories online about the Flowers-Frisby drama. Nan, most likely could tell you quiet a bit if you can get her to talk.
Kerrie,
Thanks for commenting. I’ve been through alot of the research online. There is some interesting stuff out their. The ‘other’ Duane Flowers has also done yeomans work on these lines. The problem is in find documents to back up the stories and settle it one way or the other.
